Daily mythology: Harvest Moon

We do interpretations of poems, so why couldn’t we do interpretations of songs and video-clips? Here we have to respect as well the words as the visual things as the music. It should ideally form an unity, as it does in this song of Neil Young. He did it 1991 – way in the past – and still it’s fresh and new.
It is a dreamlike love song, of course, very smooth and a little bit kitsch. The antiphony of singer and steel guitar makes us rock, makes us sway to the music. Now the video: first we see a mountain restaurant by night with a big golden harvest moon, trees everywhere, the whole dived in blue (including the Cadillac, first closed with a white top, in the end cabriolet. The night sky and the kissing couple at the end). It reminds a bit of Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”; this blue, this “little bit of nothing” tells us, that this sweet love song has an eerie note too. A couple gets out of the car and into the restaurant (it is actually Neil himself wit a girl in black coat and bloomy summer dress), a man is sweeping rhythmically – a central motive: the door keeper. Will he let them in? Of course, and saluting Inside people already dance, another Neil is singing, playing guitar and mouth-organ while Neil Young hugs his girl. No, those lovers won’t dream that night away like children, they shall go to dance,
“I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon.”
We see Nicolette Larson and Geena Davis as background singers, while the song has it’s climax (“Because I’m still in love WITH YOU”). Alex is the host of them, we see her behind the bar, we see (on top of the house) a panel with a naked woman with a second panel in between her legs: Eat at Alex’s. This is clearly an allusion for pussy-eating, isn’t it? And we all know, that dance always is a prequel for fucking. In the video though we only see shining eyes, smiles and in the end kisses – while Neal kisses his mouth-organ. Don’t get mad, feminists, if a girl would sing SHE would kiss the harmonica! While dancing the girl drops a small white matchbook – or is ist a business card? We read “Alex’s”. She’s dressed different now: in white shirt and light blue hot pants. In the end, the doorkeeper sweeps that matchbook away. Whatever you do this night, it’ll be swept away!
Now: watch that video clip again! *smile*

  1. The song starts with a wish,
” Come a little bit closer
Hear what I have to say
    Just like children sleepin’
We could dream this night away.”
This wish is longing for former times, were we were young and childish. I felt that his video-clip is all about the nostalgia. The images remind me of the sixties happy, irresponsible, easy life. Just love and romance. Nothing to worry. Sincere relationships, the times when everything and everybody was friendly. All these things we already forgot them. And the moon is the most romantic and mysterious object of the past here. So you are right about the “twin peaks” Today the moon lost all of it’s mystery. As Neil Young remarks: “Before there was no organized religion, there was the moon”.

  2. Ingrid’s comment:

    Harvest Moon
From his album of the same name, this song was written as a tribute to his wife, Pegi. The song celebrates longevity and fidelity in relationships, both in its lyrics and in a truly beautiful melody. The guitar, mixed with pedal steel guitar are out front, but what makes it so special is the background vocals that evoke a woman’s contentment with her man. All of it together represent the essence of beauty and romance.
