Daily mythology: Mnemosyne, Mνημοσύνη

She was one of the titans, she was the daughter of Uranus and Gaia, means from mother earth and father sky 🙂
Zeus himself fell in love with her – though she was not the only one…
He slept with her for nine nights and she gave birth to the nine Muses: Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Euterpe (flutes and lyric poetry), Thalia (comedy and pastoral poetry), Melpomene (tragedy), Terpsichore (dance), Erato (love poetry), Polyhymnia (sacred poetry), Urania (astronomy).
Mnemosyne herself is the personified memory, while her daughters protect arts and sciences.
They were often evoked: Sing me, Muse, the song….. (first words of Homer’s Ulysses).
But back to Mnemosyne. Memory is a strange ability: it is not like a hard disk, where every file is stored for ever and can be brought to light any second.
You get something – and you forget it. Mnemosyne but is like a fisher on the water, she does not know, what will be in her nets and appear to daylight. But constantly she provides us with memories. Often, we prefer the memories to the real things, don’t we? In the underworld there are two waters: one is called “Lethe”, if you drink of it, you forget, the other is called “Mnemosyne”, drink it to remember!
Mnemosyne wants you to remember, but in same time knows about the futility to recollect.
