Daily mythology: Outfashioned Indicator boards

Before the digital age came you could see mechanical indicator panels at railway stations. The goal of every train had to be shown there. If a train started, the whole panel started to rattle because all the indications changed places. For every letter of the destination there was a kind of drawer where the letters of the Alphabet clapped down until the right letter was to be seen. As there are trains to Middlesborough there had to be many drawers. (Fuck! How hard it is to explain such a simple thing!) When the right letter appeared, the clapping stopped. Let me give an example:

  1. Stage: AAAAAAA
  2. BBBBBBB
  3. BCCCCCC
  4. BDDDDDD
  5. BEEEEEE
  6. BFFFFFF
  7. BGGGGGG
  8. BHHHHHH
  9. BIIIIII
  10. BKIKKKK
  11. BLILLLL
  12. BMIMMML
  13. BNINNNL
  14. BOIOOOL
  15. BPIPPOL
  16. BQIQQOL
  17. BRISSOL
  18. BRISTOL

Got it?

Now if the mechanic was broken, you could read “BSISTOl” or “ARISTOL” or even “ASPERGL”, etc….. But anyway, you know where to travel, don’t you?
