As crusader Raniero di Ranieri rode from Jerusalem back to Firenze, he vowed to bring a burning candle back home. In order to not allow that flame to become a candle in the wind, he sat back to front on his horse. En route he lost his spurs, that wasn’t fatal because his horse knew the way.
