Mythology: Centranthus ruber

centhrantus

Centranthus ruber is a perennial plant from the family of valerianaceae. Here it is a typical village-flower, even in Bodrums town-gardesn you can find it.

Myth:

As crusader Raniero di Ranieri rode from Jerusalem back to Firenze, he vowed to bring a burning candle back home. In order to not allow that flame to become a candle in the wind, he sat back to front on his horse. En route he lost his spurs, that wasn’t fatal because his horse knew the way. Where the spurs fell down Centranthus rose, that’s why we call them spur-flowers
